Black Sheep Final Preview
Towmville face Woodlands on Sunday at Hanging Heaton C.C. in the long awaited final of the Black Sheep Champion of Champions competition.
LEE Smith hopes to bow out on a high note as Townville’s captain this weekend.
The former Methley and Wrenthorpe skipper is stepping down after two seasons at the helm at the Poplar Avenue club.
And it promises to be an exciting finale as the Castleford club aim to lift two trophies in two days.
Defending champions Townville are vying with Wrenthorpe for the Premier Division crown on the final day of the league campaign in Saturday.
Next day, Townville will aim to repeat their stunning win over holders Pudsey Congs in the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy quarterfinals when they face another Bradford League side Woodlands in the final at Hanging Heaton.
Batley are the only CYL club to reach the final of the competition since it inception 30 years ago. They lost to Hanging Heaton in the 1990 decider.
Former CYL club Woodlands, whose line-up is expected to include ex-Townville opener Russ Murray, will be favourites on Sunday, especially after this season’s Priestley Cup success.
Townville’s record in recent cup finals is poor. In the last 12 months, they have lost to both Streethouse and Treeton in Yorkshire Council Championship finals and have also been beaten by Wrenthorpe in the Barry Winstanley Trophy final.
However, Smith believes Townville can defy the odds and bounce back this weekend.
"We know we will be the under dogs against Woodlands but we have shown we have the players who can turn things round when we have been down and out," said the 37-year-old.
"We have plenty of character in the side and we have players who are determined to put it right against Woodlands.
"It might take a brilliant catch or a brilliant run out to change the game and tip the balance in our favour. We just need that bit of luck that every team needs in a final.
"We need to put on a show against Woodlands after they the way we underperformed against Treeton in the Yorkshire Council Championship final last weekend."

Tim Walton Townville Townville's potential match-winners include former Essex and Northants batsman Tim Walton, who is on course to be the CYL's leading scorer for the second successive season.
They will also hope for another big contribution from 22-year-old Pakistan all-rounder Bilal Hussain who hammered 125 in the 62-run victory over Pudsey Congs.
