Championship still up for grabs
EAST Ardsley’s relegation from the Premier Division and Liversedge’s promotion to the top-flight were two of the issues decided on the penultimate weekend of the season. However, with the championships in the top two divisions both still up for grabs, there is plenty at stake on the final day next Saturday.
East Ardsley’s fate was confirmed when they lost by 143 runs to fellow strugglers Wakefield St Michael’s, for whom Mark Atkinson (112) and Ben Walters (68) shared a 169-run partnership. St Michael’s are vying with Batley to avoid being relegated with Ardsley. Batley boosted their survival chances with a 93-run win at Birstall that kept them one point ahead of second bottom St Michael’s. Scholes and Ossett pulled clear of relegation trouble with victories over Mirfield Parish Cavaliers and New Farnley respectively. Aussie opener Nick Connolly took his tally to 808 league runs this season with an unbeaten century as Ossett overhauled New Farnley’s 186-7 with 11 overs to spare. He shared a 184-run partnership with Iqbal Khan who finished unbeaten on 63. Wrenthorpe retained a one-point lead over Premier Division title rivals Townville when both teams collected maximum points. Tom Baker (4-25), Kevin Watson (3-23) and John Storey (3-21) set up Wrenthorpe’s easy win over Wakefield City, while Bilal Hussain (4-48), Glen Yates (3-26) and Tim Walton (53) led Townville to victory over neigbours Methley to ensure a nail-biting finish to the title race. Townville’s bid to win the Yorkshire Council Championship for the first time ended in disappointment with a nine-wicket defeat against South Yorkshire League Treeton in Sunday’s final at Driffield. Tanvir Bashir (45) and Andy Ward (34) top scored for Townville who were dismissed for 151 after their cause wasn't helped by controversial umpiring decisions. There's a thrilling finish to the First Division championship, with Liversedge just one point ahead of Carlton. Liversedge made certain of promotion and snatched the leadership for the first time this season with a six-wicket victory at Hopton Mills who were limited to 158-9 by Josh Tingle (3-37) and Simon Purdy (3-47). Carlton lost top spot after suffering a batting collapse against Northowram Fields. Chris Thompson bagged 4-48 and Matthew Rushworth 4-41 as Carlton slumped from 52 without loss to 120 all out, replying to 154. Wakefield Thornes, promoted last season, are making a swift return to the Second Division after their relegation was sealed with an eight-wicket defeat at Moorlands, for whom Matt Butler hit an unbeaten 104. The Second Division title race remains wide open with just five points dividing Buttershaw St Paul’s, Mirfield Parish Cavaliers A, Hunslet Nelson and East Ardsley A. Wrenthorpe A clinched the Third Division championship with a four-wicket win at Wakefield City A. Roundhay A had cause for celebration in the Fourth Division when Amraze Mahmood (146) and Waqar Rafiq (117) steered them to a CYL record total of 406-5 against Crigglestone A in a game played at Nostell. Crigglestone were skittled for 47 in reply. |
