Steve Root joins the 99 clubEaster Sunday impacts area cup competition
With the first league game starting next week, most CYCL teams experienced their first competitive game of the season in the form of the first round of the Heavy Woollen / Crowther Cup competition.
But the controversial decision to play the first round on Easter Sunday could have a significant bearing on the rest of the competition. With many teams fielding under strength sides, only 3 of last years quarter finalists now feature in round 2. The big shock being last year’s finalists Woodlands who lost to Hanging Heaton by 7 wickets. Last years winners, Barnsley eased into the second round at the hands of Skelmanthorpe however.

It was a better start for CYCL representation. 10 clubs reached round 2 compared with 8 in 2005.

Carlton got off to a flyer at the expense of Bradford League side Yeadon. Steve Root was unlucky not to reach 3 figures falling short on 99 as Carlton notched up 202. Yeadon were soon struggling as new signing Ricky Rotch struck with the first ball of their innings, eventually finishing up with 4-6 as the hosts were bowled out for 101.
Veteran Steve Lawrence in action
Last years quarter finalists Methley must have thought their total of 245 was good enough to see them into the next round however their opponents, Great Horton reached the target with 2 wickets to spare.

With the second round scheduled to be played on Sunday 14 May, the tie of the round from a CYCL prospective has to be the mouth watering match between big hitters Townville and Mirfield PC.
