Wrenthorpe miss out on Malcolm but swoop for giant Aussie all-rounder IT has emerged that former-England fast bowler Devon Malcolm was set to sign for Wrenthorpe - but his limited availability scup-pered the deal writes Adrian Kennedy.
As reported in last week’s Express Sport the super quick bowler was in talks with the club about turning his arm over for the Central Yorkshire League outfit for a number of games this season. Team manager David Vayro explained: “I have spoken to Devon a couple of times with a view to bringing him to Wrenthorpe."
“He still plays minor counties cricket but was only available for three or four games and it was not worth it . He is still bowling very quick.”
Despite the disappoint-ment of missing out on Malcolm, Wrenthorpe fans needn’t worry with another top-class player lined up to join last year’s premier division runners-up. Australian Grant Lambert has agreed to join the Wakefield team for the majority of the season. The giant six foot seven all-rounder plays for New South Wales in Australian state cricket and has a proven track record.
A few seasons ago he had a record breaking stint in the Bradford League taking 80 wickets and making 1600 runs. Vayro who is one of the main sponsors along with partner John Emerson of V and E Joiners Ltd is thrilled with the new signing: “He will be coming over on April 25th and will be available for the first game against Ossett.
“He is a fantastic player, anyone in cricket circles will tell you. He will be a great asset for us.”
Vayro is confident about the team’s prospects this year: “We were runners up ;last year and just need to toughen up mentally.
“We are going for everything this year and are looking to go the season unbeaten,” concluded the manager. 03 March 2006
