The Devon Malcom saga continues, will he sign for Wrenthorpe?

The following article appeared in the Wakefield Express on 25 February.

Malcolm in the middle of Wrens rumour

LIGHTNING-FAST former England bowler Devon Malcolm is unlikely to turn his arm over for Central Yorkshire League outfit Wrenthorpe in the coming season, writes Adrian Kennedy.

The reigning Jack Hampshire Trophy winners were rumoured to be signing the fast bowler for a number of undisclosed games during the 2006 season.
But Wrens spokesman Steve Hough dismissed the rumour: "There's nothing in it. I don't know where these things start."
Wrenthorpe were last crowned Central Yorkshire League Premier Division champions in 2003 and the signing of a former test legend would not only have been a massive boost for the club, but would also have raised the profile of the whole league.
Malcolm, 43, is a massive name in cricket circles and although he retired from cricket aged 40, at the time he was still bowling as quick as any player on the circuit.
Relying on sheer pace, Malcolm's test career peaked around 1994 when his rocket pace - in response to being hit on the helmet - left the South African batsmen in tatters.
The man of the match performance saw him take 9-57 - the sixth best test figures ever at the time - as England cruised to an easy victory at the Oval.
All in all Malcolm took 128 test wickets during his 40 appearances, as well as picking up the Wisden cricketer of the year in 1995.
His somewhat erratic batting and fielding performances proved almost as entertaining as his bowling and gave him cult status around the globe.
Although the deal is yet to be rubber-stamped, the very prospect will work wonders for the sales of helmets!
